MULTIRES: FRAMEWORK

MULTIRES is a small agricultural and silvicultural enterprise oriented towards the protection, management and production of ecosystem services

The acronym MULTIRES originates from the abbreviation of “MULTIple Resources and Ecosystem Services”.

  • Located north-east of the Municipality of Siena
  • 24 hectares of rural area, 16 of which are semi-natural forest area
  • Sustainable agroforestry management (FSC® certified “Five Oaks Forest”)
  • Careful management of biodiversity and natural capital
  • Agricultural system in conversion to organic production from 2022
  • Reduction of the production system’s dependency on external sources
  • Resource circularity and environmental footprint mitigation objectives
  • Approx. 100 olive trees, 2,500 among fruit trees and shrubs, 850 lavender plants and production of alfalfa for animal fodder

SUSTAINABILITY AND BUSINESS

MULTIRES sustainability concept is about achieving a zero balance between supply and demand for (ecosystem) resources and services, fed over time by an exchange of the locally produced surplus for goods that cannot be self-produced.

APPROACH AND VALUES

Towards self-sufficiency in the provision of water, energy and food

Zero or Negative Environmental Footprint, a long-term goal of MULTIRES to be achieved by achieving an independence in the production of primary resources.

  • Full coverage of energy and water demand by 2030
  • Implementation of actions to reduce or mitigate the environmental impact associated with the entire life cycle of the MULTIRES system
  • Adoption of measures to safeguard and sustainably manage the local natural capital
  • Increase in the provision of ecosystem services to offset the unavoidable residual environmental impact

STAKEHOLDERS

MULTIRES generates goods and services from the sustainable management of natural capital, ideally addressing a wide audience of stakeholders, from ecotourists, hunters and mushrooms pickers, to private investors, consultants and scientists. The wooded area represents a place of attraction for ecotourism.

HORIZON 2030

A condition in which the natural resources and services generated by the agroforestry ecosystem can ensure the well-being and autonomy of MULTIRES’ small local community is the goal the company intends to achieve in the 10 years since its conception

  • MULTIRES is not “hungry” for economic enrichment. Its aim is rather to establish a “real” durable physical space in which it would be possible to operate in full autonomy to keep the ecological functions, biodiversity and a high quality of the local natural capital conditions, enabling the value of human relations to be increased and ensuring optimal and long-lasting environmental protection.

2030

2020

● MULTIRES is born in July, with the acquisition of around 24 hectares of rural land ● Creation of the conceptual foundations of the business program. ● Cutting and storage of around 5 cubic meters of firewood for domestic use, within the company ●Cleaning and reopening some old paths in the existing forest (renamed “Five Oaks Forest”)

2021

● Recovery of around 80 semi-abandoned olive trees ●Creation of around 500 sqm of family vegetable garden ● Cutting and storage of around 10 cubic meters of firewood for internal domestic use ● First olive harvest and production of MULTIRES extra-virgin olive oil ● First harvest and sale of black truffles (Tuber uncinatum) ● Feasibility study for the implementation of an innovative phyto-remediation system to recover waste and rainwater for irrigation purposes, carried out by IRIDRA s.r.l. (Florence, Italy) ● Biodiversity study and calculation of the forest ecosystem services provided by the Five Oaks Forest at year ‘zero’, carried out by ETIFOR s.r.l. (Padua, Italy), with the drafting of a forest management plan and the definition of a business model ● Paths cleaning and reopening activities, making about 2 km of paths available for excursions)

2022

● Launch of the WOWnature programme promoted by ETIFOR to collect the necessary funds for developing a Food Forest ● Plantation of around 1,000 BIO lavender plants (Lavandula angustifolia) ● Sowing and first harvest of around 3 tonnes of BIO alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) on 2,5 hectares of land Cutting and storage of around 10 cubic meters of firewood for domestic use in the farm ● MULTIRES signs a contract for the lease of a rural property, for five years, increasing the olive groves area by around 2,5 hectares ● Technoeconomic study carried out by SustEner Studio (Arezzo, Italy) for the definition of scenarios aimed at implementing an autonomous system of energy production from renewable sources and the creation of an energy community ● Production of around 800 liters of extra-virgin olive oil ● Cleaning and reopening of paths (about 3 km of paths become available) ● MULTIRES obtains the Organic Farm Certificate (cod. 101959) pursuant to Article 35(1) of Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production and labelling of organic products; issued by QCertificazioni S.r.l. MULTIRES becomes a member of the Italian Association of Lowland Foresters (AFP)

2023

● Initial audit for the inclusion of the Five Oaks Forest as a certified system in the Etifor Sustainable Forestry Group, obtaining the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certification ●Studio Zari Rosanna (Monteroni d’Arbia, Siena, Italy) commissioned to design the MULTIRES Food Forest system as an integral part of the Five Oaks Forest ● Cutting and harvesting of around 5 tonnes of BIO alfalfa for animal feed purposes (fodder at km 0 for BIO breeding of Chianina cattle) ● Cutting and storage of firewood for domestic use within the farm (around 5 cubic meters) ● Planting of a first portion of Food Forest in the autumn ● Production of around 800 liters of extra-virgin olive oil ● Cleaning and reopening of paths

2026-2027

● The Food Forest plantation on 5-6 hectares of fallow land will be completed, and some small and fast-growing species (aromatic plants, herbaceous plants and shrubs) will have begun to generate their first products (berries, wild berries, etc.) ● The water supply system for fertigation of the plants will be made almost independent through the implementation of a phyto-remediation and storage system for the black and grey water produced by the farm, which will meet the total water demand by compensating for any potential lack of green and blue water supply ● The recovery of the paths rainwater regimentation and targeted harvesting to convert the Five Oaks Forest from coppice to high-trunk management will significantly increase the provision of certain key ecosystem services for the implementation of the MULTIRES project in the long term, i.e., soil erosion protection, carbon uptake and storage, removal of atmospheric pollutants, maintenance of micro-habitats for biodiversity and the provision of recreational services for hikers and sportsmen ● The company will also have increased and diversified the number of so-called “provisioning services” (ecosystem services of the “food, material and energy” category), including the production of honey (lavender, forest and mixed-flower honey), the production of eggs and white meat from extensive poultry farming, and the production of seasonal vegetables, which will be added to the existing production of extra-virgin olive oil ● From the energy point of view, the company will have, on the one hand, begun to produce on-site renewable electricity from photovoltaic panels, and on the other taken specific actions to reduce and optimise its electricity and heat consumption, for example by replacing the LPG boiler with a solar thermal system integrated with heat production technologies from wood and mixed residual biomass, with storage systems for the surplus of energy

2030

● MULTIRES’ Food Forest, together with the company’s vegetable gardens and other food, fruit and vegetable production systems, will provide the nutritional supply needed, throughout the year, to satisfy the equivalent food demand of at least ten people ● As MULTIRES will only produce a limited, albeit constant and rather diversified range of food products, the surplus will be used to acquire other products necessary to cover the entire food needs of the community in which MULTIRES is located, as well as non-food consumer goods ● The company’s water supply system will be completely autonomous, the waste water (grey and black) will be treated and reused for irrigation, and rainwater and groundwater will be stored and used for the company’s infrastructure uses ● From the energy point of view, the company will have achieved full self-sufficiency in the production of electricity and heat, developing an autonomous energy system (possibly off-grid)
